What a burst water pipe can teach us about energy

I'm so grateful that my family and I took some time out over the school holidays to travel to a beautiful island off Bali called Nusa Lembongan.

If you've not been there it's well worth the trip, especially if you like the idea of buzzing around on scooters with little to no traffic, surfing incredible, world class offshore reef breaks and snorkelling on unspoiled coral reefs, not to mention eating sustainably caught fresh fish every day. I could go on...

What we noticed on our return caught us a little by surprise... we appeared to have a water leak coming through the front wall of our house.

It was only a dribble of a leak, but not being much of a plumber, I asked a good friend of mine 'Paul the Handyman' to have a closer look.

After chipping away some mortar he discovered the leak was a little more serious than first thought... Beyond his handyman skills and onto a qualified plumber.

What they found was even more intriguing... We were losing a litre of water every 13 seconds AND the water coming from the front of the house wasn't actually coming from a water pipe but from an electricity conduit pipe!! Yelps!

It turns out that deep underground there is a spot where the water mains pipe and electricity conduit pipe meet. These 2 pipes have been rubbing together for years causing friction, eventually leading to the leak.

We don't know how long this leak has been going on for or how much water we've wasted, but at least we've found and fixed the problem.

This experience got me thinking about our mindset and our energy.

So often we aren't aware that a problem exists, perhaps because it's buried deep underground, or more likely because our focus and attention is placed elsewhere.

If we are not conscious or aware of it our mindset and our personal energy can, overtime, become like a leaking water pipe.

We all benefit from routine maintenance to our personal pipework so that we learn to identify when our mindset is draining our energy or our energy is affecting our mindset.

Whichever way you look at it, prevention is always better, and cheaper, than the cure.

The 'Tune In' program focuses on this key principle by helping leaders and their teams to build conscious awareness of their mindset and their personal energy, so they stop these 2 'pipes' rubbing together, and learn to lead themselves and their teams from a state of flow.
